Sacred Heart Splits With Ellsworth on Senior Night

Sacred Heart ended its season Saturday night in the 3A Marion substate championship game with a 46-36 loss to top-seeded and top-ranked Hesston.
The Knights and Bearcats ended their regular seasons by trading blowouts in Salina Tuesday night. The Ellsworth girls won 58-34, while the Sacred Heart boys won 54-38.
Other than a 2-2 tie, Ellsworth led the entire way in the girls game. Despite trailing, Sacred Heart kept the game close for the first half and were never down by more than six points. The Bearcats led 16-11 after the first quarter and 23-18 at haltime. With the score 25-21 early in the third quarter, Ellsworth put the game away by scoring the final 13 points of the period. The Bearcats also scored the first five fourth quarter points to complete an 18-0 run en route to a 22-point win.
The Knights finish the regular season with a 7-13 overall record and 3-9 in the NCAA league.
In the boys game, the Knights sandwiched an Ellsworth basket with 5-0 and 7-0 runs to lead 12-2 after the opening eight minutes. Sacred Heart continued to dominate and only allowed eight second quarter points to build a 27-10 lead at halftime. After an even third quarter, with the Bearcats being outscored by only one point, the Knights led 43-25 and went on for a 16-point win.
Sacred Heart finishes the regular season with a 13-7 overall record and 8-4 in the NCAA league.
The Knights will begin postseason play with sub-state games Monday and Tuesday of next week.
