Maize Sweeps South

It was a rough night for Salina South at Maize on Friday, as the Cougars were swept by Maize. The Maize girls posted a 49-24 win, while the boys won 52-44.
In the girls game, Maize used its full court press to build an early 14-2 lead. Maize then switched to a half-court defense in the second quarter, but still pulled away to a 28-11 halftime lead.
The two sides played even in the third quarter before Maize closed the game on a 10-2 run.
South was led by six points from Olivia Mitchell.
The Cougars are 0-7 overall and 0-4 in AVCTL Division I. Maize improves to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the league.
In the boys contest, Salina South hung around, but couldn’t get key shots to fall. Maize pushed out to a 13-8 lead after a quarter, and extended the lead to six at halftime, 22-16.
In the third quarter, Maize would continue adding to the lead, pushing the margin out to a dozen at 36-24.
South battled back in the fourth quarter, getting within seven, but Maize held on for the win.
South was led by 11 points each from Zach Nachbar, Trace Kochevar and Justin Stonebraker.
The Cougars are 2-5 overall and 0-4 in AVCTL Division I. Maize is 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the league.
Salina South hosts Campus on Tuesday.
