The Salina Falcons Senior American Legion baseball team will play in next week’s Class Triple A state tournament in Hays. The Falcons defeated Junction City in a zone tournament elimination game 8-2 yesterday afternoon to secure the state bid. The Falcons then defeated Hays 8-6 in 12 innings in what was supposed to be the first championship game of the tournament. However, since Hays has an automatic bid to state as tournament host, the Eagles elected not to come back to Salina for today’s decisive championship game.
Against Hays, the Falcons grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Both squads added a run in the sixth and the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. However, Hays tied the game in the bottom of the ninth and forced extra innings.
After two scoreless innings, the Falcons exploded for four runs in the 12th. Conner Boyer drove in a run with a bases loaded walk, and Dalton Dooley laced a bases-clearing double to push the lead to 8-4.
Hays tried to rally again, scoring twice and had the potential tying run at the plate before reliever Matt Rowe shut down the Eagles.
Against Junction City, the Falcons scored twice in the first. After Junction City scored in the third, the Falcons pulled away by scoring one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Keenan Breen picked up the win. The Falcons also turned a triple play in the sixth inning.
