Derby Takes Two from South

Mike Hammett - January 7, 2014 9:23 pm

Derby picked up a pair of wins at Salina South on Tuesday night, taking the girls game 26-22 and the boys game 67-53.

In the boys game, Derby started fast. The full court, trapping defense forced several South turnovers in the opening quarter, and the Panthers shot 9-for-14 from the floor in the opening frame, building a quick 21-13 lead. Derby used a 12-0 run to establish the lead.

In the second quarter, Derby pushed the lead to 11 at 28-17 before South went on a 6-0 spurt, capped on free throws by Shawn Smith, to make it 28-23 with 2:17 to play in the half. Derby would then close the half on an 8-2 run to regain an 11-point lead, 36-25, at halftime.

In the third, Derby would continue to pull away, reaching a 14 point lead at 44-30 and 46-32 before South would start to chip away. A three-point play by Zach Nachbar pulled the Cougars back within 10 at 51-41 after three quarters.

In the fourth, Derby slammed the door shut. The Panthers pushed the lead back out to as much as 16, answering every Salina South basket with either a bucket of their own or free throws.

South was led in scoring by career highs of 13 points from Shawn Smith and Zach Nachbar, and a career high 10 points from Aaron Mar.  Derby was paced by 18 points from Keaton Steadman, and 15 points each from James Conley and Jeremy Dunham.

South drops to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in AVCTL I, while Derby is 4-3 and 3-1 in AVCTL I.

In the girls game, it was a slow go on the offensive end in the first half for both teams. South hit just five of 21 shots, but it was better than Derby’s 2-for-15 shooting. Olivia Giroux’s three-point play with 1:38 to go in the half gave the Cougars a 12-9 lead at the break.

In the second half, the shooting didn’t improve for either team, but Derby did continue to have some success at the foul line to stay afloat. Derby used a three-pointer and then three free throws from Haley Mills to take a 17-16 lead on South after three.

In the fourth, South took a 22-20 lead on a basket by Teryn Holloway with 3:31 left, but it would be the last South points. Derby tied the game on a basket by Kenzie Young, and then took the lead on four free throws by Grace Mitchell, including two to seal the game with nine seconds left.

The Cougars had three opportunities in the one-and-one in the final minute when down either one or two points, but couldn’t convert on the first free throw all three times.

Unofficially, South hit 9-of-35 shots at 26 percent and was 1-for-12 from three. Derby was 6-for-33 at 18 percent and 1-for-10 from three. The difference was at the foul line, where the Cougars were 3-for-6 and Derby was 12-for-22.

South was led in scoring by six points from Olivia Mitchell, while Derby had 10 points from Grace Mitchell.

Salina South drops to 0-6, 0-3 in AVCTL I, while Derby is 3-4 and 1-3 in AVCTL I.
