Central Splits With Derby

KSAL Staff - January 17, 2014 11:40 pm

Friday night presented a final opportunity for the Mustangs to prepare for the Salina Invitational Tournament next week, and Central ended up splitting wins with AVCTL I rival Derby.

In the girls game, the Panthers scored the first six points of the night, but the Mustangs would outscore Derby 17-2 the final 5:21 of the first quarter and lead 17-8 after the first. Central would not look back from there, and lead 31-18 at the half.

The Mustangs would outscore Derby 11-10 in the third quarter and lead 41-28 after three. In the fourth, Central would pull away, and defeat Derby 64-40. The Mustangs were led by 19 points from Shaelyn Martin. Hailey Mayfield would add 13. Derby was led by Grace Mitchell’s 12 points. Central is now 9-0 overall 6-0 in AVCTL I play and will host Smoky Valley in round one of the Salina Invitational Tournament on Monday.

In boys action, the first quarter proved to be the difference, in a game where there were 52 fouls and 70 total free throws, as Derby used their early momentum to pick up a 73-62 win.

The Panthers put together a 9-2 run halfway through the beginning quarter, and led 19-9 after one. Central got it back to single digits, but a three pointer by Keaton Steadman before the buzzer gave Derby a 32-19 advantage at the break.

Salina Central fought their way back in the third quarter using an 11-3 run, but trailed at the end of three 49-37. The tempo of the fourth quarter slowed to a snails pace, with a plethora of free throws, and Derby closed out the Mustangs by a final of 73-62.

The Mustangs were led by 26 points from Treyton Hines. Jordan McNelly finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Derby’s guard did the damage, with Jeremy Dunham scoring 26 and James Conley adding 18.  The Mustangs drop to 5-4 overall 4-2 in AVCTL I play, and will host Andover in the opening round of the S.I.T. on Tuesday.
