Mustangs Ready for State Tournaments

Salina Central’s boys and girls basketball teams are set to begin state tournament play today and tomorrow at the Class 5A tournament at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka.
The seniors for both teams visited the KSAL studio on Tuesday as guests on In The Zone. An archived version of the program is posted at the bottom of the story.
The Salina Central boys play first. The Mustangs are the seventh seed and face second seed Hays in the quarterfinals. Hays is undefeated at 22-0, but faced its toughest test of the season when the Indians defeated Central 51-50 in overtime back on February 11. The Mustangs had a double digit lead in the third quarter, but let it slip away down the stretch before losing in the extra frame. Central has won three straight games coming in, including Friday’s thrilling buzzer-beater overtime win at Andover for the sub-state championship. Hays defeated Bishop Carroll to advance. Coverage starts during KSAL’s In The Zone from 6:05 to 6:20, then pregame coverage takes over at 6:20 with tip-off at 6:30 on SportsRadio 1150 KSAL and online at ksal.com.
The Salina Central girls will play on Thursday against St. James Academy. The Mustangs are the second seed at 21-1, while St. James comes in at 17-5. It’s the second trip to state in the last three years for the Central girls. Two years ago, the Mustangs lost to St. Thomas Aquinas in the first round. The Thunder are making their first state tournament appearance in the school’s nine-year history, knocking off Blue Valley Southwest by one in the sub-state championship to advance. The Mustangs held off Newton, 52-37, to advance to state. Coverage from the Expocentre begins on Thursday at 6:05 with In The Zone, and continues with pregame at 6:20 and tip-off at 6:30, all on SportsRadio 1150 KSAL and online at ksal.com.
