The Salina Central Mustangs made a long road trip Friday night to take on St. Thomas Aquinas and came home with their first win of the season.
Both teams came into the game with identical 0-2 records. It was the Saints taking early leads of 14-0 and 17-7, but the Mustangs came back to take a 21-17 advantage into halftime.
Salina Central added to their lead with another touchdown early in the third quarter to go up 28-17. St. Thomas Aquinas then answered on their next possession to cut the deficit to 28-24. The Mustangs extended their lead back to eleven points late in the third quarter and made the score 35-24.
St. Thomas began the fourth quarter with a field goal to cut the lead to one possession at 35-27. Another touchdown and two-point conversion would have tied the score at 35-35, but a penalty forced the Saints to make another attempt to tie the score. With a miss, the Mustangs clung to a two point lead.
Within the next minute of gametime, Salina Central wasted no time answering with another long touchdown run to make the score 42-33. Trailing again by two possessions, the Saints refused to lay down and pulled within two points again making the score 42-40 with just over two minutes left in the game.
Salina Central converted a late first down and, with St. Thomas Aquinas having no remaining timeouts and unable to stop the clock, the Mustangs held on for a two-point victory.
