After a sluggish first half, Kansas Wesleyan’s women’s basketball team hit high gear in the second half, limiting McPherson to just five points over a nine-minute stretch, as the Coyotes pulled away for a 57-36 win at Mabee Arena on Thursday night.
Kansas Wesleyan got off to a quick start, as Vanessa Kresin hit a pair of three-point baskets to open the game. McPherson would score the next five with Aubrey Barton to pull back within one at 6-5.
Wesleyan would take control of the game with a 9-2 run, started by Christian Cassity’s lay-up off a steal, and capped on a fast break bucket by Kresin to lead 15-7.
The Coyotes would go up nine at 18-9 on a three by Katie Pfeifer, but McPherson would quickly cut the deficit to five at 21-16 on a second three by Barton with 1:48 to go in the half. The Coyotes answered with the final three points of the half, capped on a runner by Cassity at the buzzer to put the Coyotes up 24-16 at the break.
In the second half, McPherson scored the first five points, pulling within three at 24-21 on a three-point play by Bailey Brown. The Coyotes responded with back-to-back buckets by Alecia Smith and Caley Greving to lead by seven at 28-21.

McPherson would get five points on the board to cut the Coyote lead in half. Callie Atkins accounted for all five points in one possession, hitting a lay-up and getting fouled. Atkins completed the three-point play after a technical foul was assessed on Wesleyan for having six players on the floor after a substitution.
Wesleyan kept the pedal down, though, going on a 13-0 run after the five-point possession. Christian Cassity accounted for eight points in the run as the Coyotes led 49-31 with 4:38 left.
Pfeifer hit five threes to lead the Coyotes with 15 points. Cassity added 14 points while Kresin had 12. McPherson was led by Barton’s 14 points and a career-high 13 points from Atkins.
