The 2013 Salina Falcons season ended on Thursday with a 6-3 loss to the Newton Knights at the Class AAA State American Legion baseball tournament at Larks Park in Hays.
Newton scored all the runs they needed in the first inning off Salina starter Keenan Breen. Newton loaded the bases with no outs before two runs scored on one passed ball. After a strikeout and a walk, Austin Crumrine and Drake Sturgeon chipped in RBI singles for Newton to stake the Knights to a 4-0 lead.
The Falcons struggled the entire game to string together hits. The Falcons scored a run in the second on Mason Brightbill’s solo home run, added a run on Conner Boyer’s groundout in the fifth, and added their final run on Breen’s RBI double in the seventh. Breen’s double was the Falcons’ only hit with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-14 in the game and 4-for-30 in the tournament with runners in scoring position.
Breen took the loss for the Falcons. Robert James kept the Falcons in the game, pitching eight and two-thirds innings in relief, giving up two unearned runs on four hits, walking three and striking out nine.
