HIGHLIGHTS: Derby Too Much For Salina Central

Todd Pittenger - September 27, 2013 10:25 pm

The Salina Central Mustangs found out first hand Friday night just how the good the Derby Panthers are. Derby rolled into Salina and played the role of homecoming spoilers, defeating the Mustangs 45 – 14.

Derby built up a big lead. The Panthers lead 28 – 0 at halftime, and then put the game out of reach by scoring on their first two possessions in the second half.

The Panthers held the Mustangs scoreless until late in the second half. Quarterback J.W. Maldaner hit Malik Veal with a 30 yard touchdown pass late in the 3rd quarter. Maldaner later hooked up on a 30 yard touchdown with Kamen Kossow with :14 left to play in the game.

Derby quarterback Jeremy Dunham accounted for 6 touchdowns. He ran for 2 touchdowns, and threw for 4 more, including 2 touchdown passes to DeAndre Goolsby.

During halftime ceremonies Tiana Leeper was crowned homecoming queen.

With the loss, the Mustangs fall to 1 – 4 on the season. They are at home again next week, hosting the Maize Eagles for a special Thursday night game.
