Coyote Women Fall to Friends

Kansas Wesleyan’s women’s basketball team turned the ball over 27 times and shot just 25 percent from the floor in the second half and 30 percent for the game, struggling in a 60-48 loss to Friends on Saturday night at Mabee Arena.

The game started slowly, with both defenses taking control. Friends took an early 3-0 lead before the Coyotes tied the game at 3 following a free throw and bucket by Caley Greving with 15:12 left in the half. After a Falcon bucket, Greving then completed a three-point play to take a 6-5 lead.

With the game tied at 9, Friends went on a 9-0 run, capped on a basket by Kayla Justice, to lead 18-9 with 8:01 to go in the half.

Wesleyan got within five at 23-18 on a basket by Alecia Smith with 4:15 left, but the Falcons got back-to-back baskets from Kassy Ptacek and Kaylan Sanders to go back up nine at 27-18.

Then, Kansas Wesleyan finished the half strong. The Coyotes held Friends scoreless for over three minutes, going on a 9-0 run. The run started with a three by Katie Pfeifer and ended with free throws by Christian Cassity to tie the game at 27 with 22 seconds left in the half.

Friends ended the half with a jumper by Sarah Munds to lead 29-27 at the break.

In the second half, Friends raced back out to a nine point lead at 36-27 on back-to-back baskets by Sarah Munds to lead 36-27 with 16:36 left.

Wesleyan started chipping away, getting back within one at 40-39 on a three by Katie Pfeifer with 8:06 remaining.

However, Friends wouldn’t let Wesleyan retake the lead. A bucket by Shann Sellers on the next possession allowed Friends to start a 7-0 run, going up 47-39 with 6:22 left. The Coyotes got within five at 47-42 on a a free throw by Karlie Steinle with 5:13 remaining, but it was as close as the Coyotes would get. Friends closed the game on a 13-6 run, hitting free throws down the stretch to pull away.

Cassity led the Coyotes with 12 points. Munds led Friends with 14 points, while Kayla Mollere had 11 and Kayla Justice tallied 10 points.

Friends is 20-6 overall and 11-3 in the KCAC, while Kansas Wesleyan drops to 12-13 overall and 7-7 in the KCAC.
