KSAL Staff - February 7, 2014 10:47 pm

It had been 13 days since Salina Central last took to the basketball court, and they ended up splitting their games with AVCTL I rival Newton on the road.

In girls play the Lady Mustangs showed no signs of rust whatsoever, winning in dominating fashion 71-27. Salina Central scored the first 10 points of the contest and would lead 18-2 after the first quarter. A 10-0 run to begin the second quarter would follow for the Mustangs and they led at intermission 36-13.

The second half proved no different, with the Mustangs outscoring Newton 16-6 in the third quarter to lead 52-19 after three. Central would expand the lead in the fourth and win by a final of 71-27.

Central was led by Hailey Mayfield who had a career high 22 points. Emily Wood scored 16. Newton was led with 10 points from Hannah Carlgren. The Lady Mustangs are now 13-0 overall. Newton drops to 9-4.

In boys action, Newton used a strong second half to pick up a 59-49 victory. The game began with a fast pace, with both teams playing up and down. The Mustangs led after the first 15-10. Central would push their lead to 24-15 with 2:50 left to go in the first half, but Newton would go on a 8-3 run to close the half, trailing Central by four 27-23.

That second quarter run would carry over into the third quarter for the Railers, as they scored the first 12 points out of the second half gate. At the end of three Newton led 39-35. The Mustangs went cold from the floor in the fourth quarter, going scoreless for over four minutes. Newton went on a 10-0 during the time period, and would win by double digits 59-49.

Salina Central was led by 16 points from Treyton Hines. Jordan McNelly added 12. Newton had strong nights from Tevin Berry who scored 17 points and Sam Lehman who scored 15 points. The Mustangs drop to 8-5 overall with Newton improving to 7-6.

The Mustangs will next be in action on Tuesday night as they entertain the Hays Indians.
