GREAT BEND – The No. 1 seeded Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes picked up wins over Southwestern 5-1 and Friends 3-0 on the first day of the KCAC Softball Tournament at the Great Bend Sports Complex on Thursday.

The wins propel the Coyotes into the Winner’s Bracket semifinals on Friday, where Wesleyan will face Ottawa at 1 p.m., in the first contest of the day.

KWU 5, Southwestern 1 – A 3-run second inning by the Coyotes would be the catalyst as Wesleyan would knock off Southwestern 5-1 in the opening game of the tournament for both teams.

After singles by Lauren Szoboscan (JR/Rancho Cordova, Calif.) and Ashley Moon (SR/Spokane, Wash.), Rachel Rheaume (SO/Riley, Kan.) connected for a 2-run triple to get the Coyotes on the board. Reanna Guzman(JR/Lakewood, Calif.) then put down a perfectly placed squeeze bunt and Rheaume beat the throw to the plate for the third run of the inning.

Meanwhile, after a rough first inning, starter Daria Leid (SR/Carson City, Nev.) settled into a groove, holding the ‘Builders to two hits the rest of the way. Leid would pitch six innings, allowing a run on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts and Hannah Holt(JR/Shawnee, Kan.) would close the game pitching the seventh, striking out two.

The Coyotes added a run in the fourth on Hannah Bapst (SR/Phoenix, Ariz.)’s single off the pitcher, but the Coyotes would strand three runners in the inning. The Coyotes added another run in the fifth on Szoboscan’s double and advance to third on an error and Szoboscan’s pinch runner Apryl Saunders (FR/Harrah, Okla.) scored on Moon’s sac fly to right.

Southwestern got its only run when Audrey Vorderlandwehr homered in the sixth, after forcing a 12-pitch at bat.

Bapst, Szoboscan and Moon had two hits each for the Coyotes.

KWU 3, Friends 0 – Leid and Holt would combine for a 4-hit shutout of the Friends Falcons in Wesleyan’s second game of the day.

The Coyotes scored all the runs they needed in the third as Kimberly Patterson (SO/Hutchinson, Kan.) had an RBI hit, Noelle Skanderson (SR/Rohnert Park, Calif.) connected on a RBI double and Szoboscan followed with a RBI hit in the frame.

Wesleyan’s pitchers did not allow a Friends baserunner beyond second base throughout the game.

Holt would pitch the seventh for her ninth save of the season, as she continues to lead the NAIA in that category.

Skanderson and Szoboscan had two hits each to pace the Coyote offense.
