Valley Center manages to hold off Salina South in both the boys and girls basketball games on Friday night, winning the girls game 33-21 and the boys 55-41.

The first quarter of the boys game was back and forth, as South sprinted out to a 7-2 lead. Valley Center would close within three after a quarter at 11-8.

Valley Center took control in the second quarter, using an 11-2 run to open the frame, leading 19-13 on a three by Jacob Brittain. South got back within three at 19-16, but would get no closer the rest of the way. Valley Center closed the half on a three by Brittain to lead 30-22.

In the third quarter, South scored the first four points to get within four at 30-26 on a basket by Zach Nachbar. Valley Center answered with a 9-2 run to go up 11 at 39-28. South would get as close as six in the fourth, but Valley Center pulled back away for the win.

Valley Center was led in scoring by Brittain’s 17 points. Nachbar led South with 10.

Both teams are now 6-7 on the season.

In the girls game, the first quarter featured back-and-forth action. South took an early 5-4 lead on a three by Emilee Holloway. After Valley Center tied the game at five, Holloway’s bucket put South up 7-5 with 1:01 to go in the quarter.

South wouldn’t score again for nearly nine minutes. In that time, the South defense gave a good effort, but Valley Center went on a 9-0 run. The Hornets led 14-9 at halftime.

It didn’t get much better for the Cougars in the second half. South would close within four at 19-15 on a three by Bre Hogan and a free throw by Teryn Holloway with 5:02 left in the third quarter. However, the Hornets scored the final five points of the quarter and pulled away to a 24-15 lead after three.

In the fourth quarter, South was never able to mount a rally, as Valley Center slowly pulled away to the 33-21 win.

South was led in scoring by 10 points from Emilee Holloway.

Valley Center is 8-5, while Salina South drops to 3-10.
