Salina Central and Salina South split its baseball doubleheader on Tuesday night at Dean Evans Stadium, with South taking game one 12-8 before Central blanked the Cougars 3-0 in game two.
In the opener, South was steady with its offense, taking advantage of 13 walks and a hit batsman. The Cougars scored in six different innings, racking up 12 runs to hold on for a 12-8 win over the Mustangs. South’s Cole Hoover gave South an 8-6 lead in the sixth with a two-run homer. Central got a run back in the bottom half, but South notched four more runs in the top of the seventh, including an RBI double from Dylan Becker, to lead 12-7. Central would score a run on Nick Shaffer’s RBI single, and have the bases loaded with one out in the bottom half, but South picked up a double play to end the game.
Dalton Wassenberg was the winner on the mound in game one, throwing five innings. Zach Nachbar earned the save. Wassenberg was also two-for-three at the plate in the game with five RBI.
In the nightcap, Central would do all of its damage in the first. Andrew Stratman drove in the first run, and a two-RBI hit from Zane Heigele staked Central pitcher Matt Rowe to a 3-0 lead. Rowe faced just 23 batters in the complete game victory. South’s Jacob Yarochowitz took the loss, but settled down after the rough first inning, allowing just three more hits the rest of the contest.
Central is now 3-3 overall and 3-1 in AVCTL Division I. South is 4-4 and 1-3 in the league.
