Mike Hammett - September 27, 2013 10:03 pm
The Salina South Cougars were looking to get well against the Campus Colts on Friday night. The Cougars got the offense rolling, and the defense played strong early in a 56-28 rout.
The Cougars set the tone on the first play of the game, as Justin Stonebraker hit Zach Nachbar for a 60-yard touchdown pass, giving South the early 7-0 lead.
After Campus was three-and-out, the Cougars needed just seven plays to score again, when Mike Jones scored on an 11-yard run, pushing the Cougar lead to 14-0 with 6:46 to go in the first quarter.
South would force Campus to go four-and-out on the next drive, and scored two plays later on Jones’ 38-yard touchdown run. South would add a nine-yard scoring run by Jones to end the quarter up 28-0.
After Campus scored to open the second quarter on a 56-yard pass from John Becker to Dakota Dugan, the lights went out for about 20 minutes. After the delay, the Cougars kept rolling.
Salina South scored eight touchdowns on their first eight possessions, and led 56-14 midway through the third quarter.
Unofficially, South had 491 yards of total offense. Eric McCullough was the leading rusher with 14 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
