After a one-year hiatus, the Southeast of Saline Trojans are back in the Class 3A playoffs after a 42-0 win over Ellsworth Thursday night in Ellsworth.
The Trojans opened up a big lead early and just kept building on it. Cody Schlesener opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run to put Southeast up 7-0 with 7:23 to go in the first quarter.
The Trojans added on quickly in the first quarter, as Dane Long scored from a yard out and Schlesener scored again, this time from 12 yards, as Southeast led 21-0 after a quarter.
While the 21-0 score held to halftime, the Trojans added more in the second half. Keith Short found paydirt from six-yards out to push the Southeast lead to 28-0 with 9:06 to go in the third.
Then, the Southeast defense got in on the scoring as Caden Springer returned an interception 47-yards for a score, pushing the Southeast lead to 35-0 through three quarters.
Southeast capped the scoring in the fourth with Long’s 20-yard touchdown run.
Southeast was led by Short’s 128 yards on the ground on 26 carries. Long added 63 yards on 11 carries. Schlesener was 6-for-12 passing for 60 yards and also rushed for 59 yards on 15 carries.
The Southeast defense was dominant in posting its second consecutive shutout. The Trojans gave up just two yards rushing to Ellsworth on 25 carries. The Bearcats picked up 185 yards through the air for 187 yards of offense. Southeast racked up 209 yards on the ground and 275 yards of total offense.
Southeast improves to 7-2 on the season and finishes as district runner-up in Class 3A District 13. The Trojans travel to Beloit on Tuesday in the first round of the playoffs.
