KWU Softball Has Two on Preseason KCAC Team

KSAL Sports - February 14, 2014 4:13 pm

Kansas Wesleyan landed two players on the 2014 KCAC Preseason All-KCAC Softball team as selected by the KCAC softball coaches and announced by the conference office on Thursday afternoon. Kimberly Patterson (SO, Hutchinson, Kan.) and Daria Leid (SR, Carson City, Nev.) were named to the team.

Patterson, a sophomore utility player from Hutchinson, was named the KCAC Co-Freshman of the Year last season. She hit .408 for the Coyotes with a team best 58 hits and 51 RBI last season. She also led the team with 15 doubles and nine homeruns. She led the KCAC in doubles, ranked second in RBI, ranked third in homeruns, and fifth in total hits. She ranked third in the KCAC with a .718 slugging percentage and was ninth in the conference in batting average.

Leid, a senior pitcher from Carson City, Nev., was 16-4 last season with a 2.62 ERA in 21 appearances and 20 starts. She led the Coyotes with 120 innings pitched and threw three shutouts. She was second in the KCAC in total wins last season and was second in the conference with 119 strikeouts. She ranked fourth in the conference in ERA last year.

Patterson, along with Bethany’s Kelli Traffas, McPherson’s Ariel McGee and Friends’ Courtney Kifer highlighted the Preseason All-KCAC Softball Team.

Kelli Traffas earned First Team All-KCAC honors in 2013 and 2011, and Second Team honors in 2012. In 2013, Traffas was Top-10 in the KCAC in slugging percentage (0.648), runs scored (41), hits (53), RBI (39), doubles (12), triples (2), homeruns (9), total bases (96), and at bats (149).

Ariel McGee, a 2013 First Team All-KCAC selection, tied for the league lead in batting average (0.451) and led in slugging percentage (0.725) as well as runs scored per game (1.25) last season. McGee was second in hits per game (1.46), total bases per game (2.36), stolen bases per game (0.75), and on base percentage (0.519).

Courtney Kifer was named 2013 First Team All-KCAC and Co-Freshman of the Year after she led the Falcons and the KCAC in stolen bases (38), tallying 13 more than the next highest runner. Kifer was caught stealing just one time, bringing her stolen base percentage to 0.974.  Last season, Kifer had 61 hits in 156 at bats (0.391), scored 57 times, and recorded an on base percentage of 0.467.

All returning 2013 First and Second Team All-KCAC performers were nominated for preseason honors.  Head Softball Coaches also had the opportunity to nominate other key members from their teams.  The team is made up of eight seniors, a junior, four sophomores, and three freshman. Of the 16 athletes listed, seven are from Kansas. Sarah Massey (Tabor), Christina Downs (Friends), and Camille McIver (Bethany) join McGee, Traffas, Patterson, and Kifer as 2013 First Team All-KCAC selections on the preseason squad.
