Coyote Football Continues Preparation for Season

Mike Hammett - August 22, 2013 4:44 pm

After watching over practice early this week, Kansas Wesleyan University football coach Dave Dallas was pleased with how his team was coming together.
“I think we’ve progressed very well at this point in time,” Dallas said “We’ve got great leadership in some of our guys. The young guys catch on a lot faster when you have that, so you’re not having to slow things down and adjust. They’re able to adjust on the fly a little bit because some of the older guys are teaching them on the run a little bit more.”
Leadership is something the Coyotes should have loads of. Dallas returns his son, Trey, as a third-year starter at quarterback. Trey Dallas’ favorite target, Zach McClain, returns for his fourth year as a wide out. Joe Vela and Lee Stewart also saw significant playing time last season, and backup quarterback Sam Vaughn enters his third season with the program. Also, the Coyotes return several key contributors up front.
Defensively, the Coyotes are led by linebacker Brady Harwell. Kelton Reed returns at cornerback and Mark Porras is back at safety. Christian Walker and Connor Steinman also return on the defensive line.
Overall, Dallas likes how the defense is looking.
“We need to create some depth on the defensive side,” Dallas said. “Up front, defensive line-wise, I think we’re going to be pretty good. I think that was probably an Achilles heel we had last year. Our guys are a year older, and also we got a couple transfer guys that are going to help us there as well.”
The Coyotes have continued to polish their offense and defense this week. Dallas said they’ll start installing their game plan for the season opener at Hastings next week.
The Coyotes will have an open scrimmage at 1pm Saturday at Salina Stadium.
The Coyotes travel to Hastings on Saturday, September 7 at 6pm. Pregame coverage will be at 5:50 on Classic Hits 104.9 and online at ksal.com by following the Classic Hits 104.9 link under the “On Air” menu.
New this year will be a pregame audio feature on ksal.com/sports, posted by 8am on game day. This audio feature will include a break down of the match-up by the Voice of the Coyotes, Mike Hammett, color analyst Justin Dean, and sideline reporter Todd Pittenger, and player features.
