An Emporia State University associate professor is charged with a child sex crime. Seventy-two-year-old Howard Pitler was arrested Wednesday at his home in Overland Park and booked on one count of electronic solicitation of a child less than 14-years-old. The alleged incident took place in February 2023. Pitler has been placed on paid administrative leave.

No injuries are reported following a large grass fire in Wichita. The fire broke out yesterday near the Stryker soccer complex in the 29-hundred block of North Greenwich Road. The blaze spread to more than 300 acres before it was contained. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

A suspected homicide at a Kansas prison is under investigation. Forty-year-old Brooks Vonthaer was found unresponsive in his cell at the El Dorado Correctional Facility on Tuesday and later died. Investigators say Vontraer suffered multiple fatal injuries, and a 34-year-old cellmate of Vonthaer has been identified as a suspect in the case.
