Police are investigating what they say was an attempted homicide that happened early Monday morning in North Salina.
Salina Police say at approximately 4:06 AM officers were dispatched to the 500 block of East Iron Avenue to a report of several gunshots in the area.
Upon arrival, Salina Police Officers located a male subject lying in the street with an apparent gunshot wound. Salina EMS was summoned and the victim was transported to the Salina Regional Health Center, where he was subsequently transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with life threatening injuries.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene unit has been contacted for assistance processing the scene.
This case is being considered an attempted homicide and detectives are attempting to identify the victim and suspect(s). In addition, Salina Police Detectives are working to identify and locate persons who were in this area at the time of the shooting.
The department is asking the public to avoid the area and find an alternate route to work or school if they normally use East Iron. Iron Avenue is closed between Third Street and Oakdale. Alternate routes to Oakdale School would be using Ash or Gypsum to Kansas or Penn.

ORIGINAL: Police and EMS were on the scene of a shooting incident early Monday morning in North Salina.
At around 4:00 AM first responders were sent to a report of possible shots fired in the area of Iron and Front Streets. They found one person down on Iron Street, just west of the intersection with Front Street.
The person was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center.
