Central Girls Win; Boys Upset

Salina Central girls basketball coach, Chris Fear, decided to make a lineup change on Friday night at Haysville-Campus.

The infusion of young stars in to the starting lineup worked as freshmen Aubrie Kierscht and Hampton Williams combined for 37 points in the 65-41 Mustang win over Campus.

Central shook off a cold start offensive and began drill shots behind Kierscht who ended the first quarter unconscious with 3-point makes and dribble penetrations.

Williams would do her work in the second quarter—putting up 11 first half points in doing the dirty work for the Mustangs with rebounds and stick-backs.

Salina Central led 46-17 at halftime. While Campus would play better offense in the second half, it was too little too late as the Mustangs cruised for their fourth win in five games.

Campus (1-5, 1-4 AVCTL-I) has now lost five-straight since opening the season with a win. The Colts were led by Tya Tindall  with 15 points.

Salina Central (4-2, 2-1 AVCTL-I) outscored Campus 25-8 in the second quarter. Kierscht led the way with a career-best 24 points, Williams added in 13, while Peyton Griffin scored 11.

Central returns to the Brickhouse Friday to host Maize.

Campus 55, CENTRAL BOYS 45

The Salina Central Boys team was upset on Friday night on the road, as Campus outscored the Mustangs 23-17 in the final quarter.

Central struggled offensively all night. The Mustangs trailed 9-8 after the first quarter.

They led 19-18 in the closing moments of the first half, but a Campus 3-pointer by Tyler Kahmann with 2-seconds in the half put the Colts up 21-19 at the break.

After a tight third quarter, Central trailed 32-28 going in to the final quarter, however, offensive turnovers and missed shots doomed Central on their way to their first loss on the year.

Campus (5-1, 4-1 AVCTL-I) played inspired ball all night. Kahmann led the Colts with 17 points in the upset win.

Salina Central (5-1, 2-1 AVCTL-I) entered the game ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, but failed to replicate the hot shooting that got them to the unbeaten start. Mark Grammer scored 14 points to lead the way, Harper Williams scored 11 while fouling out and Brogan Richardson scored 10.

The Mustangs host Maize next Tuesday night. Live coverage can be heard on Sportsradio 1150 KSAL starting at 5:45 p.m.
