Central Claims Regional Tennis Title

Class 5A

Salina Central qualified its entire team for the Class 5A boys state tennis tournament. The Mustangs claimed the regional title with 22 points at McPherson. Maize finished as runner-up with 12 points. Valley Center followed with eight.

Collin Phelps placed second in singles play. Phelps won 6-2, 6-0 over Newton’s Jonah Schloneger in the semifinals. Phelps fell to McPherson’s Jarrod Nowak 6-0, 6-0 in the title match.

Doubles team of Reed McHenry and Max Shaffer took second. They lost to Valley Center’s Hayden Brauer and Colby Swift 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Braden Stack/McCabe Green finished third while Austin Beatty settled for third in singles play.

Class 3-2-1A

Hesston Regional
Central Plains 14, Hesston 13, Sterling 13, Smoky Valley 10, Hutchinson Trinity 4, Ellinwood 2, Sacred Heart 2, Hillsboro 0.

Singles – Sterling’s William Weiner defeated Hesston’s Logan Gamble 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in championship match.

Doubles – CP’s Brett Liebl/Devin Ryan defeated SV’s Matt Lucas/Jake Lucas7-6 (3), 6-4 in championship. SV’s Cole Brumbaugh/Johann Rauchholz defeated SH’s Trace Leners/Charlie Skidmore 6-0, 6-3 for fifth.

WaKeeny-Trego Regional
Ellsworth 19, Larned 13, Colby 13, Meade 7, Scott City 4, Hoisington 1, WaKeeny-Trego 1, Cimarron 0, Russell 0.

Singles – Ellsworth’s Joey Oberle defeated Colby’s Drew Starbuck 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-1 in championship. Meade’s Joan Bartes Vilalte defeated Ellsworth’s Cody Bourbon 7-5, 6-1 for fifth.

Doubles – Ellsworth’s Caden Whetzel/Dalton Zelenka defeated Larned’s Andrew Bright/Logan DeMond 6-3, 7-5 in championship, Ellsworth’s Adam Vehring/David Wesseler defeated Larned’s Britton Herrman/Joseph Theis 6-3, 6-0 for fifth.
