Broncos select Risner, Lock with second-round picks

Denver BroncosApril 26, 2019

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos made a splash in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Denver selected offensive lineman Dalton Risner and quarterback Drew Lock with the 41st- and 42nd-overall picks, respectively.

The Broncos traded the 52nd-overall, 125th-overall and 182nd-overall picks to Cincinnati to move up to the 42nd pick and select Lock.

“Dalton bring great versatility to our OL along w/toughness and attitude,” President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway tweeted Friday. “Drew was a four-year starter in the SEC, and he’s going to learn from Joe [Flacco] and compete for the backup role.”

Risner, a Colorado native who played his high school football at Wiggins, was a second-team All-American during his redshirt senior season at Kansas State. The 6-foot-5, 312-pound player was also named first-team All-Big 12 and the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2018.

He is only the fourth lineman in Big 12 history to earn first-team All-Conference honors in three consecutive seasons. Though Risner played tackle at Kansas State, he is believed to have positional versatility at the professional level.

Lock, meanwhile, threw for 12,193 yards, 99 touchdowns and completed 56.9 percent of his passes during his four seasons at Missouri.

As a junior, he led the nation in passing touchdowns as he threw for 44 scores.

His 9.5 passing yards per attempt in 2017 led the SEC and ranked fourth in the NCAA. He also led the SEC that season in passer rating, total yards and passing yards.

Lock showed particular growth in his accuracy during his senior season, when he led the SEC in completions. He improved his completion percentage from 57.8% as a junior to 62.9% as a senior.

Risner and Lock join tight end Noah Fant in the Broncos’ 2019 draft class.
