The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported Wednesday that the number of cyclosporiasis cases in the state has risen from 460 to 615.

KDHE continues to work with local health departments to interview cases and try to identify a common exposure to prevent additional illnesses. Individuals diagnosed with cyclosporiasis are encouraged to talk to the local health department staff investigating these illnesses when they reach out to help identify a potential cause.

The FDA has expanded its investigation into the outbreak of the intestinal disease tied to recalled iceberg lettuce after confirming the first two deaths. The outbreak, first detected in July among people who ate shredded iceberg lettuce at Taco Bell, has grown to over 6,300 cases across 15 states, including two deaths in Michigan. Officials expect the case count to keep rising because it can take up to six weeks for health agencies to determine whether an illness is part of the outbreak.

Investigators traced the contamination to recalled Taylor Farms lettuce sourced from central Mexico, which the company voluntarily pulled from the market on July 17.

The FDA’s latest update also added six more states, Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire and North Carolina, after interviews identified additional people who ate the affected lettuce before becoming sick.
