Respect the Work Zone

With ongoing highway construction, across the state and across Salina as the weather starts to warm up, the Kansas Department of Transportation urges motorists to obey all posted signage and traffic control devices when traveling through designated construction work zones.

Work zone restrictions are in effect 24/7, including nights, weekends and times when work is not actively taking place.

Disregarding work zone signage and/or traffic control devices risks the safety of road workers and motorists. It is also illegal and could result in double fines and court costs of up to $253 or more, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).

“Construction zones are among the most dangerous areas on Kansas roadways,” said KHP Lieutenant Chad Crittenden. “Speeding, distracted driving and disregarding posted signs put workers and motorists at risk. Following all road signs, slowing down and staying alert helps prevent crashes and saves lives.”

Examples of illegal and unsafe driving behaviors frequently observed in work zones include:

  • Illegal U-turns within the work zone
  • Disregarding signage and driving around barricades, cones or channelizers to access a closed area, avoid detours or change directions of travel
  • Illegal passing in no-passing zones or on the shoulder
  • Distracted driving
  • Excessive speeding

Highway workers face significant risks while maintaining and improving Kansas roadways. Drivers can help protect these workers and avoid costly fines:

  • Obey all traffic control devices and personnel
  • Stay alert
  • If able, move over for stationary vehicles with flashing lights
  • Slow down and maintain safe following distances

KDOT encourages motorists to plan ahead and be patient. Check KanDrive.gov for real-time traffic information and construction impacts before traveling. Delays are temporary, but the consequences of crashes or traffic tickets can be permanent.
