A man found near a grass fire on Saturday was transported to Wesley Medical Center to be treated for burns on the lower part of his body.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan tells KSAL News that 49-year-old Brett Hageman was found by fire fighters after they had battled a blaze in a tree line just north of Salina off Old 81-Highway near Pleasant Hill Road.

Rural Fire District 7 Chief Shane Komarek was driving through the area and spotted the fire and called it in just before 7pm Saturday evening.

Authorities found a lighter nearby and assume Hageman, who is homeless started the fire to stay warm.

He was not initially responsive at the scene, but has been able to speak to medical staff in Wichita and said he is originally from Lincoln, Nebraska.
