Justin DeanJanuary 4, 2019

The Minneapolis Lady Lions had a tough task ahead of them opening the new year, on the road against a rival opponent in Southeast of Saline, and fell to the hands of the Lady Trojans by a 53-32 final score.

A Zoie Shupe jumper to open the ballgame would be the only lead Minneapolis would hold in the contest, as that was quickly countered by a 6-0 Southeast of Saline run. The Lady Trojans would lead at the end of the first 12-8. The Lady Lions would get as close as two at 12-10 with 7:00 to go in the first half, but were outscored 12-4 over the final seven minutes of the half and trailed 24-14 at the break.

Southeast of Saline would open the third quarter on a 7-0 run and extended their lead to 39-24 after three quarters. The Lady Lions were outscored in the final frame 14-6 and took the loss by a final of 53-32.

In the nightcap a back and forth match-up took til overtime to decide a winner, with Minneapolis coming out on top by a 48-41 margin.

Both teams traded blows in the first quarter, with the Lions leading after one 9-8. Locked up at 10 all with five minutes before halftime, Southeast of Saline would use a 12-5 run over the next two and a half minutes to take their largest lead of the contest at 22-15. The Lions however finished the half on a 10-0 run the final 2:25 to lead at the break 25-22.

The third quarter proved to be much like the opening period, a back and forth slug fest that saw Minneapolis on top 34-29 upon it’s conclusion. The Lions offense went cold from the floor in the final frame, with the Trojans tying it up at 39 all with 1:40 to go. Nick Montgomery had a chance to win it in regulation for Southeast of Saline with 1.3 seconds left, but his 15 footer was waved off due to a travelling violation and the game headed to overtime.
