Teens Lead High Speed Chase

A couple of teenagers were arrested early Monday morning after leading police on a high speed pursuit reaching speeds of nearly 100 MPH in a stolen car.

According to Salina Police Captain Kyle Tonniges, at 3:45 am Monday an officer on routine patrol attempted a traffic stop in the 500 block of W Wilson on a gray 2015 Nissan Altima that failed to signal while making a turn. The driver didn’t stop, and instead accelerated.

A pursuit began that went through Central Salina reaching a top speed of 98 MPH. Along the way the car crashed into two parked vehicles in the 200 block of W Beloit, and a power pole at the corner of 9th and Prescott.

The pursuit ended when the car became disabled in the 100 block of S Phillips. Two people then exited and fled on foot. Both were quickly caught. They are identified as two juveniles, including a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy.

Tonniges says both boys are from Salina. They stole the car from one of their mothers. They could face multiple charges including felony fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a crash, deprivation of property, interference with law enforcement, and numerous traffic violations.

There were no injuries.
