Some Newton Buildings Evacuated after Bomb Threat

KSAL StaffSeptember 29, 2014

Newton police say they are evacuating several downtown buildings after a suspicious device was found near a community corrections office.

KAKE-TV reports police received a bomb threat to the corrections office early Monday and responding officers found a suspicious device in a planter outside the building.

Evacuations have been ordered in a one block radius around the building, including Newton City Hall.

Agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are on the scene, and the Wichita Police Bomb Squad also has been called. No further information was immediately available.

Newton is about 27 miles north of Wichita.
