Mysterious Boom Shakes Salina

KSAL StaffNovember 13, 2014
A group that is encouraging development in North Salina receives a $10,000 grant.

A mysterious boom rattled doors and windows in parts of Salina Thursday afternoon. KSAL received numerous reports from listeners who heard, and felt it.

So far, there is no explanation for it.

Salina Police tell KSAL News that dispatch did receive several calls about it. But, they have been unable to determine a source.

Saline County Emergency Management, the Salina Aiport and the Smoky Hill Weapons Range all report no unusual activity that would explain it. The weapons range did have two F-16 jets using it today. But neither went supersonic and caused a sonic boom.

One possible explanation could be an aftershock from Wednesday’s earthquake. According to the United States Geological Survey, earthquakes, and after shocks, are sometimes accompanied by a  loud boom. The agency records quakes of a 2.5 magnitude or greater. It had not recorded anything in the Salina area as of Thursday evening.
