Great Plains Theatre Destroyed By Fire

KSAL StaffJuly 23, 2014

The Great Plains Theatre in Abilene was destroyed by fire Wednesday night. As of 9 PM, the cause of the fire was unknown.

Approximately 50 firefighters responded to the blaze including units from Abilene, Salina and Grant Township in Dickinson County.  As a pre-cautionary measure, residents were evacuated from an apartment building located just to the west of the theatre, but crews were successful in keeping the fire from spreading to other buildings.

No one was injured in the fire.

The Great Plains Theatre had a long history of producing live stage shows.  In recent years, a movie screen had been added so films could be shown.

The theatre was vacant when the fire began around 7 PM Wednesday evening.
