An arrest late Monday afternoon clears a couple of cases involving stolen vehicles in Salina.
According to Salina Police, on Sunday an individual was working in the 400 block of Chicago and discovered their 2011 Toyota Camry had been stolen from that location. In the vehicle was a wallet, and a black and brown .380 handgun. The vehicle was valued at $4,000. Surveillance video of the theft was obtained and a suspect in a black hoodie was observed taking the vehicle, which had the keys left in it.
Following the police report the vehicle was located in the 600 block of Grand. It had front end damage and the wallet and handgun were missing. Later in the day the wallet was located in the 800 block of Windsor. Everything but $300 in cash was recovered.
On Monday, just prior to 4:00 PM, officers on patrol in the area of 12th and Bishop observed a person matching the description from the vehicle theft from Sunday. The suspect ran upon seeing officer. He was eventually located and taken into custody in that same area.
Due to property the suspect had in their possession. it is believed that he had been involved with the theft or attempted theft of another vehicle. At approximately 7:30 PM on Monday an additional stolen vehicle report was made with the Salina Police Department in the 700 block of N 10th. A 2005 Ford F-350 was reported stolen by the owner. That vehicle was located in an alley just off of Bishop and 13th. Items missing from that vehicle were matched to items in possession of the suspect.
Police arrested 18-year-old Elijah C. Hammon. He was charged with two counts Burglary, two counts Theft, Possession of Stolen Property, and several traffic infractions. At this time the firearm has not been recovered.
Earlier this month Hammon was arrested in an unrelated case, following a chase after he was caught rummaging around in a vehicle by its owner.
