Police Grab Rifle after Driver Hits Snow Pile

A distraught Ottawa County man leaves a path of destruction before police apprehend him.

According to Lt. Sean Morton, staff at Salina Regional Health Center contacted police to report a suicidal man with a gun in the parking lot Tuesday afternoon.

Lt. Morton tells KSAL News that a relative of the 29-year-old male was taking him to the hospital when he allegedly shot the windshield on the pickup they were traveling in with a rifle.

At about 2:20pm Tuesday the relative went inside the hospital – the man slid into the driver seat and left.

Police tracked him down without incident after he hit a parked vehicle at the hospital, collided with 3 vehicles at the intersection at 9th and Ash, ran over 4 mailboxes in the 1000 block of W. Ash and got stuck in a pile of snow after he failed to negotiate a turn from N. Broadway to 9th Street. There were no injuries.

The man was taken back to the hospital for evaluation. Lt. Morton adds the 29-year-old could face possible charges.

Police also want to talk to a white female who was driving one of the vehicles that was damaged at the intersection at 9th and Ash. Police say the driver of a green Chevy S-10 may have more information about the crash.
