Police Car Damaged in Crash

KSAL StaffFebruary 19, 2014

A Salina Police officer is involved in a traffic accident while on patrol.

According to Captain Mike Sweeney, 52-year-old David Villanueva was driving his police unit northbound on South Ohio just before 10pm on Tuesday evening.

A 1992 Chevy S-10 pickup truck driven by 17-year-old Ray Winters of Salina was also northbound on S. Ohio and made a legal stop to turn left onto Lewis Street and was then struck from behind.

Police say the air bag deployed causing an abrasion on Officer Villanueva arm. He was checked on and okayed by medical personnel.

Captain Sweeney tells KSAL News that citations are possible and the incident is under review by the city attorney. Police say distraction played a role in the accident.

The 2010 Crown Victoria patrol car had heavy front end damage.
