KDHE issues algae warnings, advisories for 7 lakes

KSAL StaffJune 21, 2014

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued blue-green algae warnings and advisories for seven lakes in the state, including three where wading, swimming and skiing should be prohibited.

KDHE says warnings are in effect for Marion Lake in Marion County, Memorial Park Lake in Barton County and South Park Lake in Johnson County. The Wichita Eagle  reports a warning means high levels of blue-green algae have been detected.

The agency also issued advisories for Lake Warnock in Atchison County, Logan City Lake in Phillips County, Milford Lake in Clay, Geary and Dickinson counties, and Old Herington Lake in Dickinson County.

An advisory means blue-green algae have been detected and direct contact with untreated lake water is strongly discouraged for humans and animals.
