Guard Supporting Veterans Day Events

The Kansas National Guard will support Veterans Day celebrations in Salina, and across the state

Events scheduled for Saturday Nov. 9

Great Bend – The 731st Transportation Company will participate in the seventh annual Great Bend Veteran’s Recognition Day, 1649 W K-96 Highway, with a military equipment static display. Equipment on display will be a M915A5, the military’s version of a semi-truck. Battery E, (Target Acquisition) 161st Field Artillery will also be supporting the event. The equipment will be on display from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Holton – The Museum of the Kansas National Guard mobile museum will be on display during the Veterans Day 5K run in downtown Holton. The 5K is from at 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Iola –Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company and the Forward Support Company, 891st Engineer Battalion, Iola, will be participating in a Veterans Day Parade. Soldiers from the units will be carrying a giant United States flag in the parade and driving military vehicles. The parade will be held at the Iola Square and will start at 10 a.m.

Kansas City, Mo. – Col. Thomas Foster, commander of the 287th Sustainment Brigade, will be the master of ceremonies at a Veterans Day celebration at the Colonial Presbyterian Church, 9500 Wornall Rd. The celebration is from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Topeka – Col. Ronald Krueger, wing commander, 190th Air Refueling Wing, will be the keynote speaker for the Salute Our Heroes Gala at the Ramada Inn, 420 SE 6th St. Members of Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, Topeka, will provide a Color Guard for the event. The gala starts at 6 p.m.

Wichita – Four soldiers from the 287th Sustainment Brigade, Wichita, will be participating in a Veterans Day parade in downtown Wichita. The soldiers will drive a HMMWV and a light medium tactical vehicle in the parade. The parade starts at 11 a.m.

Events scheduled for Monday Nov. 11

Alma – Members of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard will be visiting Alma Manor, 234 Manor Circle to hand out certificates of appreciation to residents who are veterans. The ceremony is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Andover – Soldiers from the 287th Sustainment Brigade, Wichita, and 226th Engineer Company (Vertical), Augusta, will provide military vehicles on static display as part of the Veterans Appreciation Day at the Andover Middle School, 1600 North Andover Rd. The event is from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Equipment on display will include a HMMVW and 10T Dump Truck.

Emporia – Col. John Andrew, chief of staff for the 35th Infantry Division, Topeka, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony held at the All Veterans Memorial. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by the ceremony at 11 a.m.

Chanute – Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, the adjutant general of Kansas, will be the guest speaker for the Chanute Veterans Memorial Dedication. Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 287th Sustainment Brigade will provide a Color Guard for the dedication. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. north of 35th and South Santa Fe.

Clifton – Capt. James Pope, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery, Hiawatha, and the Kansas National Guard Adjutant General’s Mounted Color Guard will participate in the Clifton Veterans Day Parade/Ceremonies hosted by the American Legion. Pope will be the guest speaker at the ceremony immediately following the parade. The parade is on Main Street and begins at 2 p.m.

El Dorado – Chief Master Sgt. John Davis, Jr., will be the guest speaker for the 16th Annual Celebration of Freeman program at the El Dorado Middle School Auditorium, 500 W Central Ave. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

Eskridge – The 190th Air Refueling Wing Honor Guard Team will be providing a color guard for a Veterans Day parade on Main Street. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m.

Goodland – Capt. Scott Weber, commander of the 170th Maintenance Company, will be attending the Veterans Day services at the VFW, 824 Main St. Services begin at 12 p.m. (CST).

Liberal – Col. Barry Adams, special assistant to the adjutant general, Topeka, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony at the Seward County Community College Student Union, 1801 N Kansas Ave. Detachment 1, 731st Transportation Company will provide a color guard for the ceremony which begins at 12 p.m. Following the ceremony, a free lunch will be served for all veterans.

Leavenworth – Col. John David Johnson, chief of staff, 35th Infantry Division, Fort Leavenworth, will participate in a Veterans Day parade. The 35th Infantry Division will also be driving an up-armored HMMWV in the parade. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m.

Manhattan – Staff Sgt. Marion Martin from the 995th Maintenance Company will participate in the Manhattan Veteran’s Day Parade. The parade will take place along Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Manhattan – The 190th Air Refueling Wing Honor Guard Team will be providing a color guard detail for a Veterans Day ceremony at Mercy Hospital, 1823 College Ave. The ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m.

Pratt – Maj. Adam Krein, administrative officer, 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, Wichita, will be the guest speaker for a Veterans Day event at the Pratt Municipal Airport B29 All Veterans Memorial, 40131 Barker Ave. Soldiers from the 1161st Forward Support Company will also be participating in the ceremony. The ceremony starts at 2 p.m.

Salina – Lt. Col. Richard Fisher, executive officer of the Great Plains Joint Training Center and garrison commander of the Kansas Army National Guard Training Center, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day Ceremony at Sunset Park, 700 West Sunset Drive. Command Sgt. Maj. Greg Kober, command sergeant major of the Great Plains Joint Training Center, will be the sergeant at arms. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

Salina –Maj. Patrik Goss, facilities commander for the Army Aviation Support Facility #2, Salina, will be the guest speaker for a Veterans Day ceremony at the Salina Christian Academy, 1009 Highland. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

Salina – Master Sgt. John Duerr, chief instructor, Regional Training Site – Maintenance, will be speaking to the 5th and 6th grade classes at Lakewood Middle School, 1135 Lakewood Circle, at 7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 12:50 p.m. He will also be speaking at Coronado Elementary, 518 Neal at 8:35 a.m.

Shawnee – Lt. Col. Martin Fries, commander of the 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, Olathe, will be the guest speaker for a Veterans Day event at the Hope Lutheran School Veterans Day program, 6308 Quivira Rd. The ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m.

St. Mary’s – Members of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard will be visit St. Mary’s Manor, 206 S Grand Ave., to hand out certificates of appreciation to residents who are veterans. The ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Tecumseh – Capt. Janet Dial, chief of wing intelligence, 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas Air National Guard; Chief Warrant Officer 5 Hector Vasquez, command chief warrant officer, Kansas Army National Guard, and Adrienne Dickey, 190th ARW Family Programs, will participate in a Veterans Day assembly at Tecumseh South Elementary School, 3346 SE Tecumseh Rd. The assembly begins at 8:35 a.m.

Topeka – Brig. Gen. Eric Peck, commander of the Kansas Army National Guard and assistant adjutant general-Army, Manhattan, and Chaplain (Maj.) John Potter, full-time chaplain, Kansas National Guard, will participate in the Washburn University Veterans Day Appreciation at the Vietnam Veteran Memorial, 1700 College Ave. The event begins at 12 p.m.

Topeka – The 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas National Guard Foundation and Museum of the Kansas National Guard, and Topeka Eagle Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, will be participating in the Topeka Veterans Day parade on Kansas Avenue. The parade starts at 11 a.m.

Topeka – Lt. Col. Brian Riniker, inspector general for the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Topeka, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day program at the Great Overland Station, 701 N. Kansas Ave. The program starts at 2 p.m.

Topeka – Lt. Col. Fran Oleen, commander of the Logistics Readiness Squadron, 190th Air Refueling Wing, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day assembly hosted by the Air Force JROTC at Washburn Rural High School, 5900 SW 61st St. The assembly starts at 2 p.m.

Topeka – Several members of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard will be visiting local nursing homes to hand out certificates of appreciation to residents who are veterans. The schedule for those visits is:

Wamego – Members of the Kansas Army and Air National Guard will visit the Good Samaritan Home, 2011 Grandview Drive, to hand out certificates of appreciation to residents who are veterans. The ceremony starts at 11 a.m.

Winchester – Maj. John Tucker, plans officer, 35th Infantry Division, Fort Leavenworth, will be the guest speaker at the Jefferson County North High School, 302 5th Street. The ceremony starts at 1 p.m.
