Group Touts Kansas Meat Processing Need

A nonprofit group that supports small and family farms in Kansas is trying to build support for a meat processing facility and food hub project in the eastern part of the state.

The Kansas Rural Center on Monday invited ranchers, meat processors and economic development professionals to a public meeting June 17 at the Franklin County annex in Ottawa. The center wants a dialogue on what it calls the needs and opportunities for a USDA-certified meat processing facility and food hub development in eastern Kansas.

Speakers will discuss local food market opportunities for meats and potential funding sources for processing and storage facilities. Results of a feasibility study for a food hub in Douglas County also will be presented.
