Antiseptic Wound Spray Authorized

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for F10 antiseptic wound spray with insecticide to help prevent and treat New World screwworm (NWS) infestations.

According to the Kansas Livestock Association, the over-the-counter product can be used on cattle, horses, minor species such as sheep and goats, and a variety of wildlife, but not dogs and cats. The withdrawal period for cattle is 30 days. Milk taken from cows during treatment, and for 10 days after, must not be used for human consumption. Treated calves and calves born to treated cows must not be processed for veal.

As with any EUA, FDA has determined available scientific evidence suggests the product may be effective against NWS and its benefits outweigh potential risks, but research will continue. This authorization only lasts as long as the emergency for which it was declared.
