Abilene Ready For Flour Power

Enjoy a fun start to your summer at Flour Power when it returns to the Abilene Fairgrounds this Friday and Saturday. This annual event offers something for everyone.

If you like competition barbeque events, the Wheat Stock Grill-Off is one you won’t want to miss. Teams compete in four categories. It is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society so winners qualify for the American Royal World Series of Barbeque Competition in Kansas City. Check out the details at www.FlourPowerKs.org and sign up now. The first 32 team entries receive free electricity.

If eating barbeque has more appeal than competition grilling, come to the barbeque dinner on Friday, May 16. Tasty barbeque is served from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in air conditioned Sterl Hall on the fairgrounds. A ten-dollar ticket buys a hearty meal of pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw, bread, cookie, and iced tea. Children age ten and under eat for five dollars.

Do you like to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over classic cars? Do you have a vintage car you like to show? The Motor Mania Car Show on Saturday draws a big crowd of both participants and viewers. Abilene’s Eisenhower Park offers a beautiful location to showcase these classic automobiles. Pre-registration is only $15. Visit www.FlourPowerKs.org and click on ‘car show’ to find a printable entry form or for more information call Ryan at 785-263-1431.

The Wiener Dog Jog is hilarious as wiener dogs wander, dilly dally, or sprint to the finish line. If you have a wiener dog, you’ll want to enter. If you don’t have a dog to enter, you’ll want to watch. Registration forms can be found on the Flour Power website. Save $5 by pre-registering.

The Gold Medal Groovy Baking Competition on Saturday is new to Flour Power this year. The baking contest will consist of three different categories including yeast bread and rolls, cakes, and cookies. There will be two age divisions for each category: the youth division is 12-18 years and the adult division is 19 years of age and up. The top three winners in each category and age division will win cash prizes of $100, $50, & $25 for adults and $50, $20, $15 for youth. Plus there will be a $75 winner for the overall best interpretation of the Flour Power theme. Cost to enter is $5 for adults and $2 for youth which covers unlimited entries per person. Entry forms can be found at www.FlourPowerKs.org.

All ages will find something to enjoy in the fun and games area. Kids will enjoy the inflatable rides. Tickets can be purchased to participate in these rides: Euro Bungee, King Croc, 3-lane Bungee Run, Jungle Safari Bounce, and Gator Hide & Slide. If thrilling rides are not your thing, you can try bingo; there is a prize for every winner.

Friday night and Saturday all ages have the opportunity to get a bird’s eye view of Abilene by taking a helicopter ride. Cost is $40 per person. The helicopter can accommodate up to three people at a time.

There is no admission fee to Flour Power. Flour Power is an annual fundraiser presented by Memorial Health Foundation and General Mills to support health care projects in the community.
