Carol Jean Leonard (Stritesky) passed away on May 31, 2026.
Born on Groundhog Day, February 2, 1944, to Edward and Joyce (Brown) Stritesky, Carol grew up on a farm near Luray, Kansas. Her childhood was filled with animals, over the years she cared for numerous pets, including kittens, rabbits, goats, baby chicks, and even a baby alligator.
After graduating from Luray High School, Carol moved to Salina and attended Brown Mackie College. There she met an Air Force serviceman from Kentucky, Harlan Leonard. The two were married in a church in Luray and made their home in Salina, where they welcomed their only daughter, Jacinda, in 1969. Last year, Carol and Harlan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family in Kansas City at Lidia’s Italian Restaurant.
Carol worked for GMAC for 30 years in both the Salina and Topeka offices. Following retirement, she and Harlan enjoyed traveling to Branson, Dallas, San Antonio, and making countless trips to Shawnee to spend time with their two grandsons.
When Jacinda traveled for work, Grandma and Papo gladly welcomed the boys to stay at the Leonard home—affectionately known as “The Resort. Together they explored local favorites including Rock City, the Salt Mines, Rolling Hills Zoo, the Cosmosphere, Wallace Farm, and Oakdale picnics, among many others.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Joyce Stritesky, and her baby sister, Connie Christina.
She is survived by her loving husband, Harlan, who was the most wonderful caregiver during her challenging final years; her daughter, Jacinda (Kurt) Commerford; and her pride and joy, grandsons Camden and Cale.
Memorial contributions are not necessary; however, cards and condolences are welcomed and may be sent to the family in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th St., Salina, KS 67401.
Cremation has been chosen, and services will be held at a later date.
