James “Jim” Harold Yost, 87, of Culver, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas. He was a lifelong member of the Culver United Methodist Church.
Jim was born on December 8, 1938, in Salina, Kansas, the son of Fred and Irene (Snedaker) Yost. He attended school in Culver and graduated with the class of 1957.
At 18, Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force. He completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He subsequently served three years in the reserves and received an honorable discharge. He returned to Salina, Kansas in 1959 and began a 25-year career with the Salina Fire Department, serving as a captain for nearly three years. Jim retired from the Salina Fire Department in 1982 and returned to the family farm in Culver, where he worked alongside his father, Fred, in farming.
Jim married Dorothy (Gunzelman) on November 23, 1961, and they had two children, Theresa and Mike. His loved ones remember Jim as an outspoken, disciplined man who didn’t need a spotlight to show how much he cared. To know what mattered most to Jim, one would only have to look at his bedside table. There sat his most precious treasures: his wedding picture, photos of his children, and grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, and great-grandson, Elijah Achey.
Jim is survived by his wife Dorothy Yost; daughter Theresa Yost (Evan Muller) of Culver, Kansas; son Mike (Carla) Yost of Jenks, Oklahoma; his grandchildren Anthony Elder and great grandson Mason of Denver, Colorado; Angel Elder (Nathan Achey) of Salina, Kansas; Cody (Haley) Yost and two great grandchildren Eleanor and Theodore of Jenks, Oklahoma; Connor (Kaylin) Yost of Allen, Texas.
