Wildfire Recovery Resources Available For Kansans

Multiple wildfires have burned across Kansas since Feb. 17, fueled by high winds and dry conditions. In response, Gov. Laura Kelly issued a state of disaster emergency declaration ahead of the anticipated fire weather. For many farm and ranch families, these fires have caused devastating agricultural losses, including livestock.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has established a centralized wildfire recovery page at agriculture.ks.gov/Recovery to serve as a single hub for agricultural relief resources. The site connects farmers, ranchers and industry partners with state, federal and local assistance programs and will continue to expand as needs evolve. KDA is working closely with partners across Kansas agriculture to ensure affected producers have access to timely support.

Producers are encouraged to carefully document losses in these early stages of response and recovery. Photos, receipts and detailed records will be critical when applying for assistance or reimbursement.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is coordinating with ranchers and veterinarians in impacted areas to assist with the safe disposal of livestock mortalities. Those with questions should contact their local KDHE district office.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency offers several federal disaster relief programs following wildfire events. Fact sheets and direct links to those programs are available on the KDA recovery page.

Producers in need of assistance are also encouraged to connect with the Kansas Livestock Association, which is helping coordinate relief efforts and resource sharing for impacted livestock operations. More information is available here.

Kansas agriculture is resilient, and in times like these, neighbors helping neighbors makes all the difference. If you or someone you know has been affected, please reach out and take advantage of the resources available.
