Swedes Men Hold on For Road Win; Women Lose

The Bethany mens basketball team picked up another clutch road win on Wednesday night, beating Sterling at the Gleason Center, 72-68.

The Swedes got out to a 17-4 to start the game, holding Sterling to just 1-13 from the field to start the game.

However, the Warriors were able heat up to get back in to the ball game, trailing 32-26 at the break.

The second half went back-and-forth between the Swedes and Warriors, as each time it seemed like Bethany would pull away, Sterling would have an answer.

Sterling’s Trey Dubbert led the Warrior rally in the second half coverting on three 3-pointers. At a couple of different points, Sterling was able to capture the lead.

The Swedes trailed 65-64 with a little more than a minute left when the Swedes’ Reed Stephens converted on a contested 3-pointer with shot clock expiring to put the Swedes up.

Bethany followed that with a stop and an and-one make by Mookie Duncan with one minute left to put the Swedes up for good.

Sterling (2-12, 1-10 KCAC) was led by Dubbert and JaMiah Windom-Haynes scoring 15 points each.

Bethany (8-7, 5-5 KCAC) played without one of its top scorers, Isaiah Saenz for the night. The Swedes were paced by Duncan’s 18 points and 13 rebounds. Tyler Larkin had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Mitch Brown scored 10 as well.

Bethany next travels on the road to Saint Mary on Saturday.

 

Sterling 72, BETHANY WOMEN 54

Bethany’s women never challenged the 11th-ranked and unbeaten Sterling Warriors on Wednesday night from the Gleason Center.

Sterling would lead 21-11 after one, 39-26 at halftime and 54-39 at the end of three.

Sterling (16-0, 11-0 KCAC) was led by Alexis Theus with 19 points and Bailey Bangert adding in 12 points.

Bethany (8-7, 4-6 KCAC) was led by Sena Atkius with 12 points, Cassidy Enns chipped in 11 and Marissa Pope tallied in 10.

Up next for both Swedes teams, they’ll travel to Leavenworth to play the Saint Mary Spires on Saturday. The game will also be apart of the KCAC Network “Game of the Week” and can be heard on two Rocking M Media stations, 95.5 The Rock and 92.7 The New Zoo.
