Kay Coleen Hanchet, 64, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022. She was born June 11, 1958. She was the 3rd daughter born to Earl and Coleen Hanchett. She is survived by two older sisters, Linda (Hanchett) Schrag and Tara (Hanchett) Cupps, brother-in-laws, Jerry Schrag and Terry Cupps, niece Jody Schrag McCoy and nephew Troy Schrag; great nieces, Gracie, Jada, Trey Childs, and Sidney Schrag; Susan Wensink/family, and Sarah Macalus/family.
In her younger years. she attended school at Gypsum Elementary thru 5th grade. Dad was transferred with International Harvester Company to Anthony, Kansas. She attended her Jr. high 6th – 8th grade years in the Anthony Middle school and her freshman year at Chaparral High School. Dad was transferred to Salina, Kansas her sophomore year so she attended Salina South High School sophomore thru senior years. Her college years were at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS. where she graduated with an Education Degree in 1980.
She taught at Salina South before joining Dillons for 28 years. The staff and the shoppers loved her, and she loved them. She was very excited when the new (huge) store was built. You didn’t have to worry about finding something you needed…you just asked Kay and she would lead you right too it. I think she probably knew every square inch of that store. Her goal was to make the shopper happy. In the earlier days of her career with Dillons, they use to give out rewards to their workers for their performance. As I was going thru some boxes in the basement of things she kept, I found stacks of those reward papers with her name on them. Didn’t surprise me at all as her main focus was on the people who shopped there and the people she worked with.
She will be greatly missed by her family and the many friends she knew and loved during her time here with us. Tara found this quote and it is what Kay’s personality truly was: What You Leave Behind Is Not What is Engraved in A Stone Monument but What Is WOVEN in The Lives Of Others. She truly touched many lives with her joy, her love for her friends, and her love of family.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Coleen Hanchett; paternal grandparents, Herbert and Velma Hanchett and maternal grandparents, Raymond and Elsie Cyr.
Celebration of Life service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday August 3, 2022 at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Cremation was chosen; private inurnment will be at a later date in Delphos Cemetery, Delphos.
In lieu of flowers memorials in Kay’s memory can be made to Smoky Hill Rehabilitation Employee Fund or Kindred Hospice of Salina, Kansas and may be sent in care of Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. 8th St., Salina 67401.
