The first regular Army regiments comprised of African Americans are being honored today. It’s National Buffalo Soldiers Day, marking their post-Civil War creation in 1866.

The day was first commemorated in 1992, with General Colin Powell dedicating a monument at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers were based.

Today, there are no known living Buffalo Soldiers.
