Kansas lawmakers are considering cracking down on the supplement kratom.

A Kansas Senate bill would classify kratom as a Schedule one drug in the Uniform Controlled Substances Act. The measure would place kratom in the same category as hard drugs like methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin.

Kratom is the leaves of a tropical tree that is native to Southeast Asia. It may produce a “high,” or rush of euphoria that is akin to the effects of opioid abuse.
