Goveronr Sam Brownback continues to face resistance from Kansas legislators to authorizing another $202 million in bonds for a new national biosecurity lab.

The House Appropriations Committee on Thursday postponed a decision on the governor’s proposal for the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility at Kansas State University.

The governor says the additional bonds will complete the financing for the $1.15 billion lab.

The state already has authorized $105 million in bonds. President Barack Obama’s proposed federal budget includes $714 million for NBAF.

Kansas pursued the project because it promises high-paying jobs, but the cost has escalated. House committee members said they want more information about why.

A Senate committee approved a bill Wednesday to authorize the bonds but imposed conditions designed to prevent the state’s costs from rising again.
