What was supposed to be a simple ribbon cutting event Friday morning at a downtown business turned into a poignant moment for a Salina woman, who became a bit emotional when she looked around a saw the large group of people who gathered in support of her, and her boutique and formal apparel shop.
Family, friends, colleagues, supporters, and the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Blue Coats gathered for a ribbon cutting and grand opening of Princess and Penguin.
Mai Moxter took over ownership and management of the business about four years ago. She recently relocated to Downtown Salina.
Mai told KSAL News Princess and Penguin offers a wide variety of formal wear including wedding gowns, mother of the bride dresses, prom dresses, military ball gowns, and tuxedo rentals and sales. They also offer men’s suits, and will soon have the capability of having custom suits made.
Princess and Penguin also offers in-house alterations on any type of clothing.
Mai became emotional when speaking about things she and her family have overcome to get where they are today. Shortly after she took over the business her husband was diagnosed with cancer, which he is still battling. Mai has been strong for him in his battle, while at the same time taking care of her family and a growing business.
Multiple family members were there Friday in support of Mai, including among others siblings, her mother, and her father-in-law. Some traveled from as far away as Vietnam.
Mai credited the support she has received from her family and friends, and her dedicated staff to her success. That spirit of family is what she and her staff pride themselves on.
Mai said she is grateful for the support her business has received since relocating. She loves being part of a thriving downtown.
Mai says whether it’s a formal occasion like a wedding or prom, or just a couples night out, she wants to help you look your best.
Princess and Penguin is located at 122 S Santa Fe in Downtown Salina.
