Central Alumni Seek to Honor Classmates

A group of alumni from Salina Central High School are working together to establish a scholarship fund to honor their classmates who have passed away.  Central graduates are working to establish a scholarship to honor their classmates from the graduating classes of 1998, 1999 and 2000 who have passed away. The fund, established through the Salina Education Foundation, will fulfill the wish of a departed classmate.

Organizers say the project started on social media, via a Facebook event page for the 20th reunion of the class of 1999.

“Several of us had been chatting about those who had already passed on,” Amy Adams, a Central graduate and member of the scholarship’s organizing committee, said. “It was hard to think that they would not be there to celebrate and reminisce with us at the reunion.”

Adam Hulstine, a Salina musician and small business owner, brought up the idea of creating a scholarship to honor classmates who had died.

“Instead of a physical monument on Central’s campus that would not do much good beyond a ceremony and would easily be overlooked by students,” Hulstine wrote, “I propose we establish a Salina Central High School Classes of 98, 99 and 2000 Memorial Scholarship Fund in the names of all of our friends who are now gone too soon.”

Tragically, before plans for a scholarship could get underway, Hulstine passed away from health problems.

“Adam wanted to create a legacy to remember our friends and support students for years to come,” Adams said. “The scholarship was his idea, and it only seems right to make it a reality.”

Early efforts to raise funds for the scholarship have been successful, with only $2,850 remaining toward the $10,000 needed to establish the fund.

The scholarship will be in memory of the following Central Graduates:

Class of 1998

  • Steven Cosco
  • Collin Ross
  • Chris Rowan
  • Chadd Vogan
  • James Walle
